The closest hotel to Heathrow is Aerotel, inside Terminal 3 arrivals. Sofitel is the only hotel connected to Terminal 5, Hilton Garden Inn is the walkable hotel for Terminals 2 and 3, and four hotels share a covered walkway to Terminal 4. No Heathrow hotel shuttle is free. The paid Hotel Hoppa costs £7 for a single ticket, and Premier Inn Terminal 4, at £70 to £110 a night, is the cheapest walkable option.
Prices checked November 2026. Hotel prices in this guide are typical nightly ranges for a standard room, taken from the sources listed at the end. Prices move with dates, so treat every range as a planning figure and confirm the total for your exact night before you book.

| Renaissance London Heathrow | Bath Road, backing onto the airport perimeter, for Terminals 2, 3 and 5 via Hoppa | No hotel shuttle of its own, per Marriott. Paid Hotel Hoppa only, £7 single. Dedicated routes H2X to Terminals 2 and 3 and H5X to Terminal 5 | £150 to £250 |
Two warnings belong with that table. First, Bath Road is a road, not a terminal. A Bath Road hotel that looks close on a map still needs a bus, a POD, or a taxi to reach check in. Second, the headline room price is not the full cost for a Bath Road stay. Add £7 per adult for a Hoppa single, or £1.85 per adult for a local bus, for each leg you actually ride.
If you are driving and leaving the car, compare a bundled stay with parking against booking the room and parking apart. Our park, sleep and fly guide explains how those packages work. At Heathrow specifically, Sofitel lists parking packages for 4, 8 and 15 days, and Hilton Terminal 4 lists packages for 15 and 21 days booked direct, according to the comparison source used for this guide.
Terminal by terminal: how access actually works
Terminals 2 and 3
Hilton Garden Inn London Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 is the only hotel connected to Terminal 2. Hilton calls it the only hotel connected to Terminal 2, and the comparison sources put the walk at about 5 minutes to Terminal 2 and about 8 minutes to Terminal 3 through a pedestrian underpass. Head for Points adds a practical detail the marketing omits: from Terminal 2 you walk through the short stay car park to reach it, and Terminal 3 is a little further. The hotel has a rooftop Runway Bar, per Hilton and guest reviews of the property.
Aerotel is the other true on site option for this pair of terminals, and it sits inside Terminal 3 itself. Its own site says it is in the Terminal 3 arrivals hall, a few steps from Terminal 3 check in desks, and within walking distance of Terminal 2 and the Heathrow Express. Its own FAQ puts Terminal 2 at about a 10 minute walk by the covered pedestrian walkway. It is landside, outside the restricted area, and its FAQ is explicit that you cannot stay airside and walk to it. You must enter the UK side of the border first.
Every other hotel for Terminals 2 and 3 sits on or near Bath Road and relies on transport. Hotel Hoppa routes for Terminals 2 and 3 are H2B, H2C, H2D, H2H, H2P, H2R and H2X. In plain terms, H2C serves ibis Styles London Heathrow Airport and the Premier Inn on Bath Road, H2D and H2R serve Radisson Blu, and H2X serves only the Renaissance. That dedicated H2X route is why the Renaissance, despite having no shuttle of its own, has one of the simpler Hoppa patterns on Bath Road.
The cheaper way off Bath Road is a red TfL bus. Routes 105 and 111 run from the Central Bus Station between Terminals 2 and 3 and stop near several Bath Road hotels. TfL lists the adult pay as you go bus fare at £1.85 from 1 November 2026, with unlimited bus and tram journeys inside one hour under the Hopper fare. Buses stop on the road, not at the hotel door, so this suits light luggage better than a family with large cases.
One more option sits just outside the airport fence. Hilton Garden Inn London Heathrow Airport at Hatton Cross is a 3 to 4 minute walk from Hatton Cross Underground station, per Head for Points, and trains from that station reach the terminals in minutes. The same source warns that the walk is short but not the easiest, and is not recommended with heavy suitcases, and that Hatton Cross station has no escalator or lift. Check the first train time before relying on it for a dawn departure.
Terminal 4
Terminal 4 is the best served terminal at Heathrow for hotels, and it is not close. Four hotels share the same covered walkway system from the terminal, so you can choose on price and still walk to check in.
Premier Inn Terminal 4 describes itself as a 10 minute walk from Terminal 4 and is the budget pick of the four at £70 to £110. Holiday Inn Express Terminal 4 describes a 5 minute stroll by covered walkway, includes its Express Start breakfast in the rate, and sits at £80 to £120. Crowne Plaza Terminal 4 shares a building with that Holiday Inn Express, so guests can cross charge between the two, per Head for Points, and sits at £130 to £200. Hilton London Heathrow Airport says to find it seven minutes from Terminal 4 by covered walkway, and sits at £150 to £250.
Do not plan on a Hoppa bus at Terminal 4. Heathrow states plainly on its hotel buses page that Hotel Hoppa buses do not currently serve the Terminal 4 forecourt. Holiday Extras lists an HHL Hoppa route linking the Terminal 4 hotels with Terminals 2, 3 and 5, which is a different job: it moves you between terminals, it does not replace the walkway at Terminal 4 itself. If you land at Terminal 4 and sleep on Bath Road, or land elsewhere and sleep at a Terminal 4 hotel, use the free inter terminal trains described below and then walk.
Terminal 5
Sofitel London Heathrow is the only hotel directly attached to Terminal 5. Accor calls it the only luxury hotel connected to Terminal 5, a five minute stroll along a covered walkway, with 605 bedrooms and suites, a spa, and 21 minutes to Paddington by Heathrow Express. That walkway is the whole reason to pay £220 to £400. For a Terminal 5 flight before 7am, no other option removes as much risk from the morning.
Thistle London Heathrow Terminal 5 is the budget alternative for this terminal, at £70 to £110, but it is not walkable. Its link is the driverless POD from the Terminal 5 business car park area, a 5 minute ride that Holiday Extras prices at £8 per person each way, running from 4am to 12.15am. Note what that maths does to a family: four POD singles cost £32, on top of the room. Holiday Extras also notes the hotel can arrange a taxi at £12 to £20, taking 10 to 20 minutes depending on the terminal, which can beat four POD or Hoppa singles.
Other Terminal 5 hotels use Hoppa routes H5B, H5C, H5D, H5H and H5X. H5H serves Hilton Terminal 5 and the B and B Hotel, and H5X serves the Renaissance. None of those buses is free, whatever the word shuttle suggests to visitors used to American airports.
Moving between terminals for free
If your hotel sits at the wrong terminal, the transfer itself does not have to cost money. Heathrow Express states that travel between Heathrow terminals is free of charge if you tap in and out with Oyster or contactless, or collect a free terminal transfer ticket from a dedicated machine in each Heathrow station. Heathrow itself says you can travel between terminals using free transport. Allow real time for it. The comparison sources put inter terminal moves at 20 to 30 minutes once walking, waiting and luggage are counted, which is why matching the hotel to your departure terminal still matters more than any single amenity.
Layover and day rooms: sleeping for a few hours
Aerotel is built for this job. Sleeping in Airports lists it as offering short stay bookings in 6, 9 and 12 hour blocks, plus overnight stays, in the Terminal 3 arrivals hall on the ground floor, landside. Aerotel itself sells Solo Plus, Double Plus and Family rooms, promotes flexible hourly booking where you choose your own check in and check out times, and lists a library lounge. In a paid day use stay reviewed in November 2025, a Solo Plus room for up to 6 hours cost £65, and a Double Plus room for the same hours cost £75. The same review found that stays over 6 hours switched to an overnight rate of over £200, so the value sits in the short block, not in stretching it.
That same reviewer priced the alternative at Hilton Garden Inn Terminals 2 and 3: a day rate from 9am to 5pm, 8 hours, at £99, with no shorter package offered when they asked. If you want a full size room, a desk, and a proper bathroom for a daytime layover at Terminals 2 or 3, that is the comparison to make. For a wider explanation of how airport day rooms work and when they beat a full night, see our airport day rooms guide.
Now the correction that matters most in this section. Many older guides still send Terminal 4 travellers to YOTELAIR, the cabin hotel inside Terminal 4. Do not book around it. Head for Points, updated in September 2026, states that the YOTEL hotel which used to be in Terminal 4 is closed, and a Heathrow hotel directory records YOTELAIR Terminal 4 as closed in 2024. There is no in terminal cabin hotel at Terminal 4 to fall back on. Your Terminal 4 layover choices are the four walkway hotels in the table, booked as a night or as a day use room where the hotel offers one.
All Heathrow hotel rooms, including Aerotel, are landside. Sleeping in Airports is explicit that you need to clear immigration to access them, and it carries Heathrow customer service guidance from July 2026 saying passengers should not expect to stay overnight in the airport and will need to go landside to a nearby hotel, passing through the UK border. If your passport or visa status does not let you enter the UK, a landside hotel is not a plan. Check your transit position before you rely on any hotel in this guide for a connection.
Early flights: first buses, first trains, and the traps
The Hotel Hoppa timetable is the trap. Heathrow lists Hoppa operating hours as 04:00 to 00:00, while Holiday Extras describes the service as running daily from 04:00 to 23:00 and states directly that the Hoppa does not operate overnight, so a very early or very late flight may need a taxi instead. On the dedicated H2X route, the Hotel Hoppa timetable valid from 31 March 2025 shows the first departure from the Renaissance at 04:24, then every 30 minutes, reaching Terminal 3 departures at 04:32 and Terminal 2 at 04:36. Work backwards from that. If you must be at Terminals 2 or 3 by 05:00 for a 06:00 flight, one specific bus at 04:24 is your whole plan, with no second chance inside the same half hour if you miss it or it fills.
Three rules follow from those times.
First, for a check in before about 05:30, book a walkway hotel at your own terminal and remove the bus from the plan entirely. That means Sofitel for Terminal 5, Premier Inn or Holiday Inn Express for Terminal 4, and Hilton Garden Inn or Aerotel for Terminals 2 and 3.
Second, if you stay on Bath Road, read the timetable for your exact route number before you book the room, not after. Route letters matter: H2 routes go to Terminals 2 and 3, H5 routes go to Terminal 5, and a hotel can sit on one set and not the other at the hour you need.
Third, price the taxi before you dismiss it. Holiday Extras puts a taxi from most Heathrow hotels at £15 to £20 each way, against £7 per adult for a Hoppa single. For one person the Hoppa wins. For three or four adults with an early start, the taxi can cost about the same, leave when you choose, and go direct to your terminal, including Terminal 4, which the Hoppa forecourt service does not reach.
Breakfast timing is a smaller version of the same problem. Travellon notes that Holiday Inn Express Terminal 4 includes breakfast from 5am, which is useful for a 6am Terminal 4 departure. Thistle lists its breakfast service from 6am on weekdays and from 6am to 10.30am on weekends, per Holiday Extras, which is too late to help most dawn departures from Terminal 5. If breakfast is part of why you are paying for a hotel, check the start time against your check in time, not against a normal morning.
Which area should you choose?
Choose Terminal 4 if price and choice matter most and your flight allows it. It is the only terminal with a budget walkway hotel, and the free inter terminal trains make it a workable base for other terminals if you allow the extra 20 to 30 minutes. Choose Terminal 5 only for a Terminal 5 flight, and choose Sofitel there only when the walkway itself is worth the premium to you. Choose Terminals 2 and 3 for Star Alliance and most other long haul departures, where Hilton Garden Inn gives you the walk and Aerotel gives you the shortest possible distance at a by the hour price.
If you are comparing Heathrow with a night in central London, remember that the airport hotels earn their money on timing, not on neighbourhood. There is nothing to do around Bath Road in the evening beyond the hotel itself. The gain is a later alarm, no train risk, and a walk or a single short bus ride in the morning.
Flying on from another hub after Heathrow? The same terminal matching logic applies in the United States. See our guides to Los Angeles airport hotels, New York JFK airport hotels, and Atlanta airport hotels for the equivalent walkway, shuttle and price breakdowns there.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Heathrow hotel shuttle free?
No. Heathrow hotels do not run their own free shuttle buses, and the shared Hotel Hoppa is a paid service. Heathrow lists a single ticket at £7, a return at £13, a group single at £20 and a group return at £36, and says buses operate between 04:00 and 00:00 and do not currently serve the Terminal 4 forecourt. Any listing that describes a Heathrow hotel transfer as complimentary is describing the existence of a bus, not a free fare. The cheaper paid option for Bath Road hotels is a local TfL bus at £1.85 from 1 November 2026.
Which Heathrow hotel is closest to my terminal?
For Terminal 5, Sofitel, connected by a covered walkway of about five minutes. For Terminal 4, Premier Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Hilton all connect by covered walkway, with walks of about 3 to 10 minutes depending on the property. For Terminal 2, Hilton Garden Inn Terminals 2 and 3, about 5 minutes. For Terminal 3, Aerotel, which is inside the arrivals hall itself, or Hilton Garden Inn by an underpass walk of about 8 minutes. Every other hotel in this guide needs a bus, a POD, or a taxi.
What is the cheapest hotel near Heathrow Airport?
On the ranges used in this guide, the cheapest walkable option is Premier Inn Terminal 4 at £70 to £110, and the cheapest Terminal 5 area option is Thistle Terminal 5 at the same £70 to £110 range, before you add £8 per person each way for the POD. Bath Road rooms can be advertised below walkway prices, but add £7 per adult for a Hoppa single or £1.85 for a local bus before you compare totals. The cheapest headline rate is often not the cheapest night once transfers for two people are counted.
Can I sleep in Heathrow Airport overnight instead of booking a hotel?
Do not plan on it. Sleeping in Airports reports Heathrow customer service guidance from July 2026 stating that it will not be possible for passengers to stay overnight in the airport, that all passengers will need to go landside to stay in a nearby hotel, and that this means passing through the UK border. It also notes that passengers should not expect to remain in airside areas overnight. If you cannot enter the UK, or your connection does not allow the time to go landside and return through security, raise that with your airline rather than assuming a terminal bench is available.
Can I book a Heathrow hotel for a few hours during a layover?
Yes, at Aerotel inside Terminal 3. It sells 6, 9 and 12 hour blocks as well as overnight stays, and a reviewed paid stay priced a Solo Plus room at £65 for up to 6 hours and a Double Plus room at £75 for the same period. Full size hotels also sell day use in some cases: the reviewed comparison at Hilton Garden Inn Terminals 2 and 3 was £99 for 9am to 5pm. Note that the Terminal 4 cabin hotel, YOTELAIR, is closed, so there is no equivalent by the hour cabin option at Terminal 4.
Does the Hotel Hoppa run early enough for a 6am flight?
Only just, and only on some routes, which is why it catches people out. The service starts at about 04:00 and does not run overnight. On the H2X route the first bus from the Renaissance leaves at 04:24 and reaches Terminal 2 at 04:36. That works for a 6am flight if everything runs to time and you are on that bus. It leaves no slack for a missed bus, a full bus, or a route that starts later. For a 6am departure, a walkway hotel at your own terminal is the safer booking, and a pre booked taxi is the safer Bath Road fallback.
